Congratulations to the winners of the Central Plains Chapter student awards at the 64th Greater Kansas City Science and Engineering Fair at Union Station on March 12-14. This is the area's largest science fair with more than 1,300 students in grades 4-12 participating.

    Student Winners:

Abby Ingram, Reanne DeBose, Lance Willyard and Blair VanBiber

    Advising Teachers:

Lindsey Constance, Shawnee Mission School District

Jennifer Medina, Blue Springs School District

Each year, the Chapter's Green Schools team recognizes two projects that best advance the goal of providing green schools to every child within a generation. Abby, Reanne, Lance and Blair will each receive a renewable-powered charger for USB devices, and Ms. Constance and Ms. Medina are each granted an annual membership in the USGBC Central Plains Chapter.

The Chapter judges were particularly impressed by the scholars' use of science to evaluate technical solutions for food waste. Food waste at schools in the U.S. is estimated at roughly 30 to 40 percent of the food supply. In 2013, USDA and EPA jointly launched a U.S. Food Waste Challenge, and many regional schools are considering composting cafeteria waste. These scholars' research forms the basis for work in the field of byproduct synergy - where food waste is used as an input in the manufacture of materials or the generation of energy.
